At Southern K9 Co.we offer a range of customized possitive reinforcement services tailored to meet the individual needs of your dog and your family. Our goal is to bring out the best in every and every dog, along with helping you better understand your canine. 

Puppy training

Start your puppy off right with potty training, basic manners, and early socialization to build a strong foundation for their future. Our Puppy Training Program is designed for puppies between 8 weeks and 6 months of age, the most important period for learning and development. We start in the comfort of your home or our training center. Each lesson last about 60mins once- twice a week.

Throughout the program, you and your puppy can expect to learn:

  • Basic obedience commands, including sit, down, stay, come, and place
  • Leash manners and walking politely without pulling
  • Potty training and crate training guidance
  • Proper socialization with people, dogs, and new environments
  • Confidence-building exercises to reduce fear and anxiety
  • Preventing common puppy behaviors such as jumping, biting, chewing, and excessive barking
  • Impulse control and calm behavior around distractions
  • Positive reinforcement techniques that create lasting results

Our goal is not only to train your puppy but to equip you with the knowledge and confidence to continue your puppy's success at home. By the end of the program, you'll have a well-mannered, confident puppy and the tools to build a lifelong bond through clear communication and trust.


Obedience and off leash

From basic obedience to advanced off-leash control, we can insure your dog becomes a reliable and well-mannered companion in any setting. No dog is to old for training, with our methods, yes! Old dogs CAN learn new tricks. We offer in home training, public training at local parks/ stores, 1/2 and full day pick up or drop off training and group classes. We want you to enjoy life with your dog not stress! Our goal is to provide you with a well rounded canine and set you up for any realist situation giving you the control and confidence you need. Southern k9 co. doesn't just train your dog, we train you to train your dog; providing you with full physiological understanding of your dogs thought process. Each lesson is about 60-90mins once-twice a week.

Throughout the program, you and your dog can expect to learn:

  • Loose leash walking and proper leash manners
  • Advanced obedience with increasing levels of distraction

  • Boundary training and waiting politely at doors and gates
  • Confidence-building exercises to encourage focus and reliability
  • Strengthening the bond between you and your dog through clear communication and positive reinforcement

As your dog progresses, we gradually introduce off-leash training in safe, controlled environments to ensure reliability and responsiveness. Our goal is to provide you with a confident, obedient dog that listens the first time—whether you're at home, on a walk, or enjoying everyday adventures together.


Behavior modification & socialization

Our Behavior & Socialization Training Program is designed to help dogs become confident, well-mannered companions in a variety of environments. Whether your dog struggles with fear, reactivity, overexcitement, or simply needs more positive exposure to new people, dogs, and places, we create a customized training plan to build confidence and encourage appropriate behaviors.

Using positive reinforcement techniques, we focus on improving social skills, impulse control, leash manners, and calm behavior around everyday distractions. Training includes structured socialization, confidence-building exercises, and real-world experiences to help your dog navigate new situations with ease.

Our goal is to develop a dog that is relaxed, confident, and enjoyable to take anywhere—whether it's the neighborhood, the park, pet-friendly stores, or family gatherings. We also provide owners with the knowledge and tools needed to maintain their dog's progress and build a stronger bond for years to come. With over 10 years of hands of experience along with five animal physiology degrees Souther k9 co. will guide you step by step to successfully succeed.

We work with a variety of behavioral challenges, including reactivity, fear, anxiety, aggression, resource guarding, excessive barking, leash reactivity, separation-related behaviors, and poor impulse control.

Our goal is to help your dog become calmer, more confident, and easier to live with while giving you the knowledge and tools to maintain lasting success. Together, we'll build a stronger relationship based on trust, communication, and understanding.


Therapy and Service dogs

Our Therapy Dog Training Program prepares dogs and their handlers to confidently provide comfort and emotional support in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, libraries, and community programs. Training focuses on developing a calm, confident, and well-mannered dog that can remain composed in a variety of environments. As your trainer I can NOT test your dog but will provide and prepare you for the test with one of the selected TDI, ATD, Pet partners or any U.S.A. recognized therapy groups of your choice. We have lots of therapy dogs currently working in local nursing homes, Norfolk/Vb Sentra, VB oncology, Schools around Hampton Roads, and private practices; along with hundreds of service dogs that provide owners task support each day.

Throughout the program, you and your dog can expect to work on:

  • Advanced obedience and reliability
  • Calm behavior around people of all ages
  • Polite greetings without jumping or excessive excitement
  • Loose leash walking in busy environments
  • Settling quietly for extended periods
  • Confidence around medical equipment, wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility aids
  • Exposure to loud noises, crowds, and unfamiliar surroundings
  • Appropriate interactions with strangers
  • Impulse control and distraction-proof behaviors
  • Handler communication and teamwork
  • Preparation for therapy dog evaluations and certification requirements

Our goal is to create a confident, dependable therapy dog that can safely and comfortably provide comfort and companionship while representing you with excellent manners.

Our Service Dog Training Program is customized to meet the individual needs of each handler and focuses on developing a highly reliable working dog capable of performing specific tasks that mitigate a disability. Training follows a structured progression while emphasizing obedience, public access skills, and task work using positive reinforcement. We can provide you AKC testing with our registered trainer apon request along with taking the public access test. Our top priority is making sure you fully understand all of the rules and regulations for having a service animal and that you and your canine are full covered under the ADA.

Throughout the program, you and your dog can expect to work on:

  • Advanced obedience with on- and off-leash reliability
  • Public access manners in restaurants, stores, medical facilities, and other public settings
  • Extended down-stays and calm behavior in busy environments
  • Reliable recall and distraction-proof focus
  • Heel work in crowded areas
  • Confidence-building in a variety of environments
  • Task-specific training based on the handler's individual needs
  • Retrieval tasks (keys, medication, dropped items, etc.)
  • Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT), medical alerts, mobility assistance, or other specialized tasks as appropriate
  • Ignoring distractions, including people, animals, food, and loud noises
  • Handler education, teamwork, and maintenance training
  • Preparation for public access testing and long-term success as a working service dog
